The NSSC

The National Security Studies Center (NSSC) at the University of Haifa was established in 2000. The goal of the NSSC is to study security in three different levels: the national level, the regional level and the global level, and to study the interrelationships between the great powers in these three aspects.

In addition, the NSSC studies the implications of the involvements and interventions of regional powers in the affairs of other states. Moreover, the NSSC focuses on the Israel-Palestine conflict, the fundamental political issues and key conflicts of the middle east and the different alliances in the region. The issues are studied in different aspects including political, economic, social, technological and security.

The head of the National Security Studies Center is Prof. Benny Miller, a full Professor of International Relations at the School of Political Sciences, University of Haifa.

Research Workshop Of The Israel Science Foundation “The New World Order”

The NSSC in the University of Haifa is honored to inform you about an international research workshop between January 9-12, 2023.

During the workshop, we will examine the challenges nationalism and populism present to liberalism and to the liberal world order.

The workshop will feature 8 leading researchers from Europe and the USA. The Workshop is funded by the ISF and the International School at the University of Haifa.

Research Group

The research group is engaged in groundbreaking research in the fields of security and intelligence. It consists of several teams of researchers from universities in Israel and abroad. The researchers specialize in various disciplines such as technology, exact sciences, humanities, social sciences and law. The group enables researchers to combine professional experience with practical academic research. The group is working in collaboration with research centers, agencies and different organizations in order to enrich the research.

Research

For over a decade the National Resilience Survey has been examining how the Israeli society is coping with the national security challenges it faces. This is the most comprehensive survey to ever take place in the state of Israel, as well as the most empirically meticulous study in the field of political sociology and Israel’s national security both in the size and scope of the sample polled. Every year the survey focuses on five dimensions of the social component of national resilience, which are: fear (from attacks by enemy states or terrorist), national optimism, militancy, patriotism, and confidence in national institutions.

The project "Extremism and political violence in Israeli society" examines the influence of traumatic and threatening events and / or conflicts ('The second Intifada', terror attacks, the disengagement etc.) on support for attitudes which express extremism and political violence within Israeli public since the beginning of the previous decade. This project is considered the leading research in this field.
